Like many urban areas Cheltenham now has a University. However it’s ability to offer higher education has been there for many years before the creation of the University of Gloucestershire and the Cheltenham College of Higher Education. As with any university town or city, Student Accommodation Cheltenham is very much a priority along with the importance of academia. What higher education first started out in the Town?
The Mechanics institute was a way for future engineers to gain their stripes and Cheltenham’s, formed in 1834 was no exception. Similar, but also very different to the institute was the Cheltenham training college. This was the final stage for those wishing to enter the ministry of the Church. This site, Francis Close Hall is still in use today by the University of Gloucestershire.
Other colleges were created in the town through the twentieth century. Most notable of these was the Cheltenham School of Art in 1852, the Colleges of St Paul and St Mary for education in 1920 and then the Gloucestershire College of Arts and Technology in 1980 laid the real foundation for the town’s reputation as a place for further education. The University of Gloucestershire is the ultimate expression of this.
