Induction ranges are great reliable pieces of kit but need some servicing and checking to ensure they continue to run safely and effectively.
Clean the Glass-Ceramic Surface Daily
Wipe down the cooking surface every time you use the induction range, with a damp cloth and a very mild, non-abrasive cleaner. If food is left to dry on the surface it can become scratched and be damaged by future cleaning. Some cleaners contain abrasives which are ok to use on work surfaces but will scratch the surface of an induction range. Also some cleaners contain water repellents which will stop the pan detection sensors from working.
Keep Ventilation Slots Clear
As a Commercial Induction Range generates heat internally, it relies on airflow to cool the electronics. Make sure to check the ventilation slots and the intake to the cooling fan on a weekly basis. Use a soft brush or low-pressure compressed air to clean any grease or dust that may have accumulated. A blocked fan will cause the Range to overheat and shut down in the middle of service.
Inspect Cables and Connections Regularly
Check the power cables, plugs and connections every month for signs of heat damage such as discolouration, cracking or looseness at the plug. In all cases such damage will require repair before it becomes a hazard to use the appliance. Never use an appliance with damaged cables.
Test the RCD Protection
Check your induction range’s RCD protection. Test the button on the RCD monthly and check that it trips and then resets correctly. For more information on checking and recording electrical equipment maintenance in the workplace see the HSE’s electrical equipment maintenance requirements for workplaces.
Arrange PAT Testing and Servicing
For all portable appliances this should be done on an annual basis by a qualified engineer, together with any other manufacturer specified servicing for that range. A useful reference for Commercial Induction Range is https://www.targetcatering.co.uk/induction-suites/commercial-induction-range.
By following a simple routine your induction range will last for years to come.
