It’s always worth remembering that getting the measurements right the first time saves so much time in the long run and can prevent expensive mistakes.
Measure the Length and Width
Using a steel tape measure rather than a fabric tape measure will give you more accurate results as a fabric tape measure will stretch. Measure the longest wall in the room and take measurements across the width of the room. Include any bay windows or doors in your floor area measurement.
Account for Awkward Shapes
L-shaped rooms and alcoves are best measured up as individual rectangles and then added together to give the total area of the room.
Add a Waste Allowance
It is recommended to add around 10% to your total floor area for cutting, pattern matching and fitting. Good carpet fitting and measurement guidance will refer to this when ordering carpet.
Note the Room in Metres
The carpet is measured in square meters, so make sure you have converted any measurements in feet and inches before ordering. State the dimensions of the room (length x width) plus the required waste.
