Is cashmere worth the price when shopping for a sweater?

When it comes to knitwear, some materials are valued more than others. Cashmere is one such fabric and generally has a price that reflects its status as a luxury item. The question is whether cashmere deserves the status it has been awarded and whether you should pay more for a cashmere jumper.

What is cashmere?

Most wool, even the highly valued Merino used in mens Aran sweaters from stockists such as https://shoparan.com/mens-aran-sweaters/, comes from sheep. Cashmere is produced by separating fine down from coarse hairs in the undercoats of specially bred goats, including cashmere goats, down goats, and pashmina goats.

Cashmere fibres are generally about 5cm long and no more than 19 microns in diameter. The name comes from the Kashmir region on the border of India and Pakistan. Definitions of cashmere are strictly regulated in many jurisdictions.

How is cashmere different from other wool?

Cashmere generally has a softer, finer texture than regular sheep’s wool and provides additional winter warmth, although it can also be worn in spring and autumn. When cared for properly – by washing by hand rather than machine and never wringing it out or twisting it – it is a durable fabric that can last many years. It is also different because it is expensive to buy, which is a reflection of higher costs both in obtaining the raw materials and processing them into a wearable garment.

Is it worth the investment?

This depends on your taste and your budget. Some high street brands have good quality cashmere jumpers at more reasonable, although still higher than average, prices. For premium brands, you sometimes pay for increased quality; at other times, it is simply name recognition. Feel the softness and thickness, try it on when possible, and always check the label for manufacture and care details and whether it is blended or pure cashmere.

Investing in a cashmere jumper could mean you are purchasing a softer, warmer item of clothing. Do your research and choose carefully, remembering that you need to commit to caring for it properly to maintain its quality.
