The sweaters man the origins stem from their use by fisherman on the Isles of Aran.  Aaron is a particularly desolate place and as a result it’s difficult to grow crops there.  It is easier to raise cattle and it’s also surrounded by the Atlantic ocean and Galway Bay.  This means a lot of fishing and these sweaters were knitted by the wives and Partners of the fisherman to keep them warm and dry as they toiled with their nets at sea.

Recently there’s been an increase in many Hollywood A-listers wearing the sweater which has put its focus back into the media spotlight.  It was originally adopted by many of the icons of the 60s such as Steve McQueen  but now modern actors such as Chris Evans and Adam Driver have also been seen wearing them.  Taylor Swift who has an influence on many people that’s also worn a sweater and has even shown up on alien lifeforms in the Mandalorian.
