Types of Architecture

Architecture is the art and science of designing buildings to provide shelter from the elements for living and working. A variety of different types of architecture have developed to meet the varying needs of people, regions and cultures throughout history. The result is a colourful tapestry of building styles that vary widely in appearance and look vastly different from one another.

Residential Architecture

A residential architect works with home-building companies and home owners to design new homes or adjust the design of existing ones. They can also help with the planning of large housing developments and estimating costs. Governmental Architecture

While the basic functions of a government are common to all societies, governmental architecture is a distinct style of its own. This is often reflected by the presence of monumental structures such as the Palace of Versailles in France or St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

Other examples include the temple fronts of Greek Revival style or the wide entablatures of Beaux Arts style buildings that became popular in America at the turn of the century. Both these styles are influenced by the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and can be recognised by paired colossal columns, statues, enriched mouldings and a sense of grandiosity.
