Timber is a widely used construction material within the UK, nevertheless it is often misinterpreted. When buying timber for projects, you want to know the truth from the fiction. Some of the most widespread myths about timber are as follows:
Myth 1: Timber treatments make it waterproof
Although treatment is one form of protective measure that can help timber to resist fungal decay and insect attack, it does not make the wood waterproof. Even though they are made this way, timber will still absorb moisture, expand, and then contract, thus planks move over time. The design is important for outdoor projects, i.e., off the ground with drainage and no water traps.
Myth 2: It will rot if it stays outside
Not true. Rot is a type of damage that develops in wet wood. Outdoor timber will live longer with the correct treatment level and correct fixing. A post can rot very quickly if placed in soil compared to when it is installed well with preventive measures.
Myth 3: The thicker the better
Thickness helps, but the kind of wood, grade and how it is supported are more influential. A thinner solid shelf can work better than a thicker board running too wide without a centre bracket, for example. If it is being used for structural work, then grading like C16/C24 matters a lot more than chunkiness. For Timber Merchants Bournemouth, visit www.timbco.co.uk/timber-merchants-bournemouth/
Myth 4: Slightly bowed timber will pull itself straight when fitted
Occasionally, you can neutralise slight bowing with fixings, but don’t count on it! Straightening twisted boards can be near impossible and may even be worse as time passes. Make sure you sight down the length before buying, and store timber flat and supported until it is used.
Myth 5: You don’t have to seal cut ends
Fresh fibres exposed in a cut penetrate through the treatment and make this the most vulnerable part of all treated timber. Sealing cut ends helps to prevent moisture from absorbing into the material, which can extend its life (especially beneficial in outdoor projects).
Myth 6: Store timber anywhere to keep for when you need it
Stacking boards on a wet floor, against the wall or outdoors in direct sunlight is another pathway to warping. Keep it flat, with dry support and out of the rain – as well as a drying period if going inside!
Just let the timber merchant know what it is you are building and where it’s going (indoors/outdoors) so they can recommend the correct timber, how to fit it correctly and ensure that it lasts a long time.
