Visiting Market Harborough with children

Market Harborough is a town rich in history and the ideal location to explore on a day out or weekend break. If you’re travelling with children, however, don’t despair as the town has much more to offer than historic buildings and a weekly market. While these might sound idyllic to you, they might not appeal to the little people. Thankfully, a lot of the activities on offer for the young ones are suitable for the grown-ups too, so there’s something for all the family in Market Harborough.

Here are some of the best fun activities to keep the kids occupied in one of the country’s finest market towns:

Wicksteed Park

There are many things to do in Wicksteed Park to keep the little ones entertained, such as play areas, rides and attractions. This theme park aimed at families features more than 30 rides including fast-paced rollercoasters, racing cars, a white-water ride and a sedate boat trip on the lake for those looking for a little less adrenalin! Your kids will have a fantastic day out at Wicksteed Park. For Things to do in Market Harborough, visit http://www.marketharborough.com/

Foxton Locks

Little ones will fall in love with the brightly coloured canal boats of Foxton Locks and it’s pretty interesting for the adults too! Whatever age, Foxton Locks is the ideal day out for all the family. Here you’ll discover two examples of incredible feats of engineering on the Grand Union Canal. Foxton Locks boasts the longest and steepest staircase lock in the UK and the remains of a strange Victorian piece of engineering called the inclined plane.

More than 4,000 boats pass through the locks every year and it’s a great spot for boat watching or taking a trip yourself before enjoying a pub lunch or finding the perfect picnic spot.

Wistow Maze

Open during the summer, this is a must-visit attraction and winner of the Leicestershire’s Best Visitor Attraction. You’ll find 8 acres of maize which are re-designed each year in a mysterious, puzzling maze where you’ll never complete the same path twice! Each year a new theme is unveiled, so it’s well worth returning for a completely different experience.

Harborough Museum

If you and your kids want to learn more about the rich history of this market town, a visit to the Market Harborough Museum is definitely recommended. You’ll find plenty of information to satisfy the grown-ups, as well as displays and fun activities to keep the kids entertained, including a collection of toys from the 17th century.
